Gamine, the 2020 champion female sprinter, has officially been retired, according to a press release distributed by owner Michael Lund Peterson.
Trainer Bob Baffert had high praise for Gamine in the release. “Gamine is the best filly sprinter I have ever trained,” Baffert said. “She defines greatness. She’s a big, beautiful, elegant filly. She was all class. We knew we had something very special right from the start.”
The five-year old daughter of Into Mischief posted a record of nine wins out of eleven starts, earning $1.7 million throughout her illustrious career. Gamine was a winner of four Grade One races, including the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, where she set the stakes and track record for fillies at the seven-furlong distance. Gamine also holds the stakes’ records in the Acorn Stakes and the Test Stakes, respectively. In 2020, she was honored with the award of American Champion Filly Sprint Horse at the 2020 Eclipse Awards.
Gamine was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Farm’s Grace Thoroughbred Holdings. She was purchased for $1.8 million at the Fasiq-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old in training sale by Lund-Peterson.
“Gamine is leaving the track happy and healthy. She gave me and my family the thrill of a lifetime,” said Petersen. “We look forward to her next chapter.”
Gamine will stand at Hill ‘N’ Dale Farm in Paris, Kentucky.
